Public Service Reform: Creating New Councils
The existing two tier system of local government – a county council responsible for some functions and seven boroughs and districts with responsibility for other local government functions – is being replaced with two all purpose councils, also known as unitary councils from 1st April 2021.
This section of our website provides some key background documents and news items. A consultation on proposed changes to Northamptonshire councils ran until 22nd July 2018.
In May 2019, the Secretary of State announced that Northamptonshire's eight existing councils will be replaced with two new unitary authorities from April 2021. Before this decision, the Government ran a consultation on the proposal, which ended on 25 January 2019.
