New exhibitions come to Kettering Museum & Art Gallery for 2016
‘Collection Connections’ & ‘1950s Fashion: A Decade of Glamour’
1950s Fashion: A Decade of Glamour
Manor House Museum: 16 January – 12 March 2016
A Touring exhibition by Epping Forest District Museum comes to Kettering Museum and Art Gallery between 16 January and 12 March 2016.
From the dazzling dresses of the Paris couture houses, to the ready to wear styles of Marks and Spencer, 1950s Fashion: A Decade of Glamour explores both the everyday and the extraordinary fashions of the 1950s. Showcasing stunning collections from museums across the East of England, this exhibition examines how the fashions of the stars were first created and then adapted to be worn by the everyday family.
On display, you will see a tailor-made Teddy Boy suit, huge swirling skirts and an exquisite evening ball gown. Get creative and design your own dream outfit or style yourself in the fashions themselves with our vintage wardrobe. Whether you remember the original fifties styles or you are trying to channel your inner ‘Mad Men’, this exhibition is fun for everyone.
1950s Fashion: A Decade of Glamour is the first in a series of touring exhibitions funded by Arts Council England. Following its launch at The Time Machine galleries in Harlow, Essex 1950s Fashion: A Decade of Glamour will tour the East of England.
Alfred East Art Gallery: 9 January – 13 February
The Alfred East Art Gallery will celebrate Kettering’s local art history by showing the connections within our collection amongst other artists. The exhibition will link up the artists according to their interesting lives, art education and exhibitions they were involved in.
Visitors will be asked to add to the findings with their own personal stories and see if other links can be found. The preview for this exhibition is on the 8th January 6 - 8pm. All are welcome.

Cllr Lesley Thurland, Kettering Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Community and Culture, said:
“January can often be a quieter month and provides a great opportunity to explore places locally that you may not have visited before. I would encourage everyone to go along and visit the Museum and Gallery to enjoy these exhibitions and what we have on offer. Keep an eye out for the 1950s themed children’s craft activities to come at February half term!”
