Revealing how artistry and creativity can be represented in even the most darkest of tales…
The Cabinet of Dr Caligari – Friday, 28th September
A wave of murders grips a German village. Suspicion soon falls on the mysterious Dr Caligari and his sleepwalker, a fortune teller in the town’s annual fair, whose horrifying predictions begin to come true. The classic of German expressionism, seen here in a stunning 4k restoration, kick started the genre and influenced countless filmmakers and artists. A bold and dark vision of post-WW1 Germany, the stylised sets featured jagged lines and twisted dreamscapes, playing with perspective to create an unforgettable and unsettling experience.
Don’t Look Now – Friday, 2nd November
Struggling with grief after the death of their daughter, a married couple immerse themselves in Venice to escape and forget. Their sanity is questioned when they are ravaged by premonitions and déjà vu, as a series of murders strike the city. Starring Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie, and directed by Nicolas Roeg, the classic of 70s British cinema uses pioneering editing techniques to fragment the narrative, using subliminal imagery to document one man’s fall into despair.
Suspiria – Friday, 30th November
Just as the remake hits the cinemas, the Alfred East Art Gallery is proud to present the original Italian cult classic from 1977, shown here in a brand new 4k restoration. An American student joins a German ballet school after the mysterious murder of a fellow student. Directed by “the maestro” Dario Argento, whose films explored horror in a truly artistic way, the film uses beautiful stylised lighting to bathe scenes in in vibrant primary colours.
