Illegal waste removed from Stamford Road site

Published: Tuesday, 17th April 2018

Kettering Borough Council has been working with its partner agencies, including the Environment Agency, to tackle the illegal dumping of waste in an empty warehouse unit on Stamford Road in Kettering.

The site, previously the United Footwear Shop and Factory, was estimated to contain 300 tonnes of mixed domestic waste.

The waste has now been removed to a licensed landfill by contractors working on behalf of the owners of the building. The Environment Agency is still investigating the illegal dumping. The Council will continue to monitor the site in the short term to ensure there are no residual fly or vermin issues, though this is unlikely given that the waste as the main food source for vermin has been removed.

Shirley Plenderleith, Head of Public Services at Kettering Borough Council, said:

“We’d like to thank the community for bearing with us and the owners of the building whilst the waste was removed. There were inevitably some odour and flies during the removal and we controlled this as much as possible by using odour and fly suppressant sprays, and proactively working with the contractors to manage the impact on the community.”

If you have any information on the incident, please report it to the Environment Agency Incident Hotline on 0800 807 060 or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

If you have any further concerns about flies, odour or vermin please contact Kettering Borough Council on 01536 410 333.
