‘Great Silver Service Bake Off’ raises over £1,000 to charity
Council’s sheltered housing residents hold baking competition
Kettering Borough Council’s sheltered housing residents rose to the occasion for a baking competition between rival scheme locations across the Borough. The wonderful idea came from the sheltered housing schemes’ very own Social Organisers’ group to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
The event took place at Windsor Gardens on the afternoon of Thursday 6th April and eight schemes entered and each baked entries in the following categories:
- Batch of savoury pastries
- Batch of biscuits or scones
- A showstopper cake
Council staff dressed up and took on the personalities of Mary, Paul, Sue and Mel from BBC’s Great British Bake Off, for an afternoon of cake and fun, raising money for Macmillan along the way. The event was very well supported and a staggering £1,020 was raised. Congratulations go to Madams Gardens in Rothwell who were the winning scheme.
John Conway, Head of Housing at Kettering Borough Council, said:
“The Great Silver Service Bake Off was a great success and an inspired idea from our residents that helps bring a real sense of community to sheltered housing in Kettering Borough. I was delighted to see so many of our tenants wanting a slice of the action, and to raise so much dough for charity really was the icing on the cake.”
