Lifeline Personal Alarms
Lifeline Personal alarms
What is Lifeline?
Kettering Borough Council operates a 'Lifeline' personal alarm scheme for Council tenants with poor mobility, serious health problems or those who feel vulnerable in their own homes.
Our Lifeline personal alarms are designed to provide support for those wishing to remain living independently within their own home. Help is available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, by simply pressing a button.
How does Lifeline work?
We supply and install a special unit in your home. All units have a button and a pendant (worn on your wrist or as a necklace) which when pressed will alert specially trained staff in a 24 hour call centre.
You will need at least two friends or relatives who are prepared to be key holders and who could attend in an emergency. If they are called, it could be at any time of the day or night to give assistance or provide access for the emergency services. However, we also recommend the use of a key-safe outside your property for use in an emergency which helps to prevent any potential delays. These are installed along with the Lifeline equipment.
You can alert the call centre either by the telephone unit or the pendant. The system will automatically contact the call centre where trained staff will know who is calling even if you are unable to speak. Staff will then decide on the appropriate course of action e.g. calling the emergency services, doctor, key-holder or simply giving advice.
Once a month our call centre will test your equipment to ensure it is working correctly and annually one of our Support Workers will come and see you to ensure that the information we hold is up to date.
Please note, you will need to have a landline telephone connection in their home to be able to use this service, and an electrical socket nearby to power the base unit.
How much does it cost?
The current charge for the system is £5.00 per week. There are no other initial set-up costs as charged by other providers.
This covers the cost of:
- renting the equipment
- maintaining the equipment
- the call centre staff
If you would like the service but feel that the cost is more then you could afford you may be entitled to other allowances. If you would like help in claiming for benefits please let us know and we will be happy to organise a visit to assist you with this.
