Access Guide to the Sir Alfred East Art Gallery
The Alfred East Gallery is fully accessible. It has 3 exhibition rooms and a reception desk, all of which are located on the ground floor.
Access for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility issues is best through the library (which is attached to the gallery). The library is located on Sheep Street. Access to the gallery is through the rear of the library through power assisted doors. The library is open when the gallery is open so there is no restricted access through this route during gallery opening hours. There are double automatic opening doors at the entrance to the library and there is flat access from Sheep Street to the library entrance.
There is flat access from the London Road Car park to the library entrance although there are cobbles on the last few meters just behind the Blitz café.
A ramp to access the gallery from the cenotaph/Manor House Gardens entrance is available on request. Please contact us on 01536 534 274 before your visit so we can arrange for the ramp to be installed. Access to the gallery from the Manor House Gardens is via 2 stone steps – there is no hand rail. Access to the Manor House Gardens from Sheep Street (opposite the cenotaph) is via six stone steps. There is no handrail.
School groups do visit during the week so if you would like to plan a visit during a quieter time please call the gallery.
We have gallery leaflets available in Polish and German.
The gallery reception is located in the East Gallery and is staffed at all times when the gallery is open. If you require any help or assistance during your visit please ask our reception staff and they will be happy to help.
Assistance dogs are welcome.
A fully accessible disabled toilet is located on the ground floor in the library. The library is open when the gallery is open so there is no restriction on access to the toilet. The accessible toilet is also available to general users.
All display areas are on the ground floor, are fully accessible and have flat carpeted floors.
Seating is always available in the gallery – the location of the seating changes on the layout of the temporary exhibitions which change every six weeks. Please call us on 01536 534 274 before you visit to check the exact location of our seating. Additional seating is available on request.
Some exhibitions may include background music and sounds.
Lighting in the galleries is generally bright and evenly lit with ceiling spot lights Some areas are more dimly lit to aid preservation of the exhibits.
There are no catering facilities on site but our reception staff can advise on nearby pubs, cafes and tearooms according you your preference.
The gallery shop is located in the East Gallery and sells a range of unique gifts and postcards from our art collection.
We have a set of evacuation procedures – should you require it a member of staff will assist you with evacuation from the building.
