A range of Art Workshops are held at the Alfred East Art Gallery. Whether you are a beginner or a professional, there is something for everyone.

Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th April, 10am - 4pm

Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch. Using a pencil blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard and using a variety of tones, learn how to create the effect of fur and feathers, the texture of skin and the glassy look of an eye.

With the expert tuition from Jamie over the course of the weekend, you will learn and be able to practice new techniques to develop your drawing skills.

All abilities welcome. All materials provided.

Saturday 18th May, 10am - 4pm

Learn how to design, cut and print a lino block.  You will be using V-shaped tools to cut away areas of the lino you wish to be white and leave the design behind, which is then rolled with ink.  We will be learning how to print the lino blocks by hand and also with a small press. 

No printmaking experience is necessary and all the materials are provided. Bring along some ideas we can turn into lino cut designs.
 

Saturday 8th June, 10am - 4pm

A one day practical exploration and encouragement of Collage as an art form to see how far ideas can be developed. Subjects covered will include preparing materials, staining and distressing papers, plus layering techniques with torn and found papers.

Basic materials will be provided, with the aim for all to complete a finished work. Participants should feel free to bring their own papers and scraps as well.

Saturday 20th July, 10am - 4pm

Spend the day exploring the process of screen textile printing using stencils. You will use multiple colours and layers to create beautiful images. You can experiment with repeating your designs and colour mixing overlay. A day for complete beginners full of fun and discovery.

Please note the price of this workshop is higher due to the type of course, resulting in a higher cost of materials and a smaller number of spaces available.

This workshop will cover a range of techniques and tools for drawing with ink. 
It will be a relaxed and informative workshop, suitable for all abilities, with qualified art teacher and professional artist, Catherine Matthews, as your tutor. 

All materials are included, plus a card mount for your favourite finished drawing.

Saturday 19th October, 10am - 4pm

The workshop will guide you through creating and drawing a pencil portrait. Participants will use a portrait photo provided at the workshop, although they can work on their own reference photo if required.

Cordell will provide advice on general head proportions and anatomy, including techniques to develop your drawing skills. The aim of the workshop is to give you the skills and the confidence in approaching portrait drawing.

Saturday 16th November,
10am - 4pm

You will learn how to use cut paper stencils laid on inked printing plates to create bold and colourful prints. The process explores layering shapes and colours and we will be printing on paper using a small portable press. 

All materials will be provided. This is an ideal introduction to printmaking and no experience is necessary.
 

Join us at the Alfred East Art Gallery for our monthly Life Drawing sessions held between 7pm - 9pm on Wednesday evenings. Whether you are a professional or an amateur artist, or just simply looking to keep your hand in, these sessions could be perfect for you.

All abilities welcome. Models and easels are provided. Please bring along your own dry drawing media and materials.
