New Leisure Centre for Desborough

Published Wednesday, 18 April 2012

The keys have now been handed over to the Council for Desborough's new Leisure Centre

Kettering Borough Council has just acquired a new leisure centre in Desborough, provided as part of a planning agreement with Desborough General Partner Ltd for the Grange Development.

The keys were handed over on Monday, 16th April. The Council is now fitting out the leisure centre which means having carpets put down and lockers and equipment installed. It is very much hoped that it will be open in three to four weeks time. The new leisure centre is located off Ironwood Avenue in Desborough.

Parkwood Leisure Ltd will operate the new centre. All booking enquiries should be made through Parkwood Leisure on 01536 761239. The old centre at The Hawthorns will close when the new centre opens.

The new centre has a large sports hall, a fitness centre, and multi use games area. Adjacent to the building is a children’s play area, bmx and skate area and 22 hectares of public green space. The play area will be opened over the next few days after routine checks.

There will be a ‘drop in’ weekend in May so that the public can come along and take a look. The opening date and the ‘drop in weekend’ date will be published on the Council’s website, through the media and at Customer Services at Parkwood Leisure.

Valerie Hitchman, Head of Community Services at the Council: “Kettering Borough Council thank all who have enquired about the new centre and encourage local residents to take a look around the centre when we have the ‘drop in’ opening weekend”

Councillor Steve Bellamy, portfolio holder for leisure at the Council, said “People from  and around the surrounding villages and towns of Desborough will soon have the most modern and purpose built sports centre in the whole of the Kettering borough.  I know that the local residents have been watching this new centre being built with great interest. I am very pleased that it is now belongs to the Council and so it won’t be long until people can start to use this fantastic new facility.”
