Recycling of domestic/household batteries
You can take batteries for recycling to Currys at Kettering Retail Park on Wellingborough Road in Ketterng.
The Household Recycling Centre at Cunliffe Drive, Kettering (Off Northfield Avenue) will accept car batteries for recycling. This site is run buy Northamptonshire County Council their phone number is 01536 484586.
In the longer term, the EU have issued a new European Battery Directive that is to make manufacturers and importers fund collections and recycling for spent batteries. This Directive includes collection and reprocessing targets for portable batteries, while all industrial and automotive batteries are to be collected for recycling. The date of UK adoption of this Directive keeps changing - at the moment it is expected to be properly implemented in July 2009.
The first collection targets for portable batteries are to be achieved by September 2012, but reprocessing targets for collected batteries must be achieved from 2010. It is however the intention of the County Council that recycling facilities will be in place at the Household Waste Centres before that time and householders will be updated on this is effected.
