'It Ain't What You Say...'

A light-hearted look at the history and idiosyncrasies of the English language. How would you pronounce 'ghoti'? When did eggs become eggs? Who first played leapfrog? How did brass monkeys lose their balls? Come along to the Alfred East Gallery to find the answers.

'John Singer Sargent's 'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose' '

One of Tate Britain's most popular pictures, John Singer Sargent's painting, 'Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose' recently spent a few months off diplay to be examined and analysed by Tate conservators, bringing new light on the making of this work. Building on the new discoveries made by connservators Rebecca Hellen and Joyce Townsend, the talk will focus on the special significance of the painting in Sargent's life and career, but also in the Tate Britain collection.

'Flushed with Success - The Story of the Smallest Room'

This fascinating talk explores the development of the toilet from primative holes in the ground through to the high-tech Japanese wonders of today, bringing back memories of multi-seaters, chamber pots and scratchy toilet paper.
