Guiding principles for cremation

Guiding Principles for Cremation

Kettering Borough Council Crematorium is a member of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM) and abides by its Code of Practice.  The Crematorium operates under the:

  • Environmental Protection Act 1990.
  • Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 from the Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999.

To comply with the Permit the coffin must not contain anything other than the deceased, who must be dressed in light natural clothing such as cotton.  Man made fibres such as fleece and nylon must not be used.

  • Letters, flowers and photographs may be placed within the coffin with the deceased.  No other items may be placed in the coffin.

We understand this is a difficult and upsetting subject but we would rather you were aware of the restrictions and why they are in place.

Every cremation is monitored for emissions which must comply with the conditions of an Environmental Permit issued under the 2010 Regulations as above.  Failure to comply with the conditions could lead to the permit being revoked and the Crematorium losing the authority to operate.

Formal action such as prosecution may be taken against those who have contributed to any instance of non compliance with the Permit.  This would include any funeral director involved and the family of the deceased.

If you are unsure of any aspect of these rules and guidance, please discuss your concerns with your funeral director as they ultimately have responsibility for ensuring the coffin conforms to the legal requirements for cremation.
