A Guide for Businesses

Disposing of waste legally

The following advice will help you dispose of business waste legally:

  1. Check the waste disposal company you are using is authorised to carry your waste by contacting the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 or visiting the Environment Agency website. You can also ask to see their waste carrier licence. If you do not make the check you could be fined up to £5,000.

  2. Keep a note of the waste carriers’ details, including the vehicle registration number.

  3. Provide a full description of the waste for the waste carrier giving details of any unusual characteristics that could affect how they plan to handle or dispose of it.

  4. If you are a business who disposes of waste on a routine basis you should arrange a trade waste agreement with an authorised waste management company or individual, or your local council.

  5. Use the trade facility at Northamptonshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres (see below) to dispose of your waste. There are four of these in the county as well as a number of private waste disposal companies.

  6. Don’t use facilities for household waste at the recycling centres – even if you are depositing waste of the correct type, you will not be completing and keeping the required paperwork and leaving trade waste there is a criminal offence.

  7. Keep all paperwork for at least two years.

  8. Don’t put business waste out with your household waste (unless it is part of your waste management agreement).

This applies to all businesses, no matter how big or small.

Business waste disposal facilities

There are four council run business waste disposal facilities across the county. Check the Northamptonshire County Council website  for opening times and information. Charges apply at these sites on a pay as you go basis and your waste carrier licence will be checked. There are also private waste disposal sites in the county.
