    Under the Clean Air Act 1993, certain chimneys serving industrial or business furnaces or boilers require approval from the Council before they are first used.

    The Environment Act 1995 introduced legislation for the local management of air quality. Part IV of the Act introduced a statutory duty for local authorities to review and assess the air quality within their districts.
