Paying Your Council House Rent
Service and other charges
If you live in a Council property your weekly charge may include a figure for rent plus other types of charges.
To find out how the rent element of your weekly charge is calculated please visit the following webpage Rent Setting.
Other charges relate to services or facilities provided to some tenants. If applicable, the following charges may be included in your annual rent review notification and show you the new weekly figure for the forthcoming rent year:
Silver Service - This charge relates to tenants of our sheltered housing properties. There are four levels of charges depending on the level of support package that we have agreed you need to live independently in one of our schemes. You cannot opt out of the Silver Service charge if you live in sheltered housing.
For more information on Silver Service view our webpages or contact your Scheme Manager.
Service Charge - These recover the costs of providing additional communal facilities at our sheltered schemes and some of our blocks of flats with communal lounges or laundries. Typical services that are included within this charge include: heating, lighting, water and cleaning for communal areas, fire alarm and lift maintenance, costs of providing a laundry, communal area window cleaning and the maintenance of open spaces.
Our service charges are set on a scheme by scheme basis and do not apply to all Council properties. You cannot opt out of service charges if you live in a scheme or block with additional facilities.
Lifeline Charge - This is a weekly charge if you have a Lifeline emergency telephone that is linked to the Call Care response centre. For more information on Lifeline visit the following webpage.
We no longer include charges for water, heating or council tax in rents for our properties.
For further information download our customer information leaflet on Service Charges.
