Election Expenses

Information
All candidates and their Election Agents who stand at elections for either local government or national elections are required to submit a return and declaration of their expenses to the Returning Officer. If candidates do not submit a return and declaration, they are committing an offence which is reported to the Electoral Commission.

The Returning Officer must give public notice in respect of Parliamentary and European Parliamentary Elections, of the availability of each set of returns and declarations for inspection at his office during working hours. These documents are also available for inspection for Local Government Elections but there is no requirement for public notice to be given.

The Returning Officer has to keep these items and make them available for inspection for the following length of time :-

• Parliamentary Elections - for 2 years
• European Parliamentary Elections - for 12 months at the office of the Regional Returning Officer (Leicester City Council)
• Borough and County Council Elections - for 2 years
• Town/Parish Council Elections for 12 months

Copies of the documents are available at a charge of 20p per photocopied page.
