Public health - drainage: Outline
Drains and sewers are pipes that carry foul waste and surface water away from houses. The public sewers are generally in publicly accessible areas, but some do run under private gardens.
Anglian
Water is responsible for the main and public sewers in the Borough. Any
sewers that were constructed before 1936, are classified as 'public',
and are maintained by Anglian Water.
Private drains and sewers are the responsibility of the house owner. In
some cases, house insurance could cover the cost of solving drainage
problems. The Environmental Health Department of Kettering Borough
Council may be able to help where there is more than one person on a
run and a solution cannot be found between those people.
If you live in a Council property, it is the Council's responsibility to sort the problem out.
For advice on how to deal with breaks and blockages, including what causes them, as well as helping with any problems you may have with your drainage, please do not hesitate to contact the Environmental Health Department or complete our online form.
