What can Kettering Borough Training do for me?
We will help you access suitable, sustainable work and provide you with advice and guidance that will raise your levels of confidence in your own abilities. During your apprenticeship we will plan, monitor and review your training on a regular basis and provide support if you need it. If you are already in employment we will arrange a suitable apprenticeship training route, which would take into account your current level of skills and experience.
What is it going to cost me?
Kettering Borough Training attracts funding from the Skills Funding Agency which covers the cost of training for all 16-18 year old apprentices. If you enrol on an apprenticeship after your 19th birthday funding is slightly more complicated, but you the apprentice, do not normally pay any fees.
Who pays my wages/salary?
Your employer pays your wages/salary. The rate of pay will be agreed at the outset of your apprenticeship, as will the timing and amount of any increments. Pay rates may be dependent upon company policy or certain industrial stipulations
Who selects the apprentice?
The final choice will be made by the employer. Kettering Borough Training will provide advice and guidance if required but the employer will choose who they consider to be the best person for the job.
Where will I be trained and assessed?
Training in trades such as Construction, Engineering, Electro-technical, Printing, Hairdressing and Accounting will be delivered at a local college. Administration, Customer Service and Health & Social Care is delivered by Kettering Borough Training at our premises at Drovers' Hall. For college based learning, assessments would be carried out at college and in your working environment. It is a requirement of all NVQ's that the greater proportion of assessments are carried out at work. This ensures that your abilities at work are assessed against the National Standards and provides evidence of your levels of personal competence. Administration, Customer Service and Health & Social Care apprentices are assessed in the working environment by skilled and experienced assessors who are part of Kettering Borough Training's team.
What is the difference between Intermediate Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships take you to Level 2 standard plus the relevant technical certificate and Key Skills.
Advanced Apprenticeships take you to Level 3 plus the relevant technical certificate and Key Skills.
What is a technical certificate?
This is a qualification that provides the theoretical and practical knowledge required by your particular industry. In some cases the Technical Certificate requires written and practical examinations, in others, it requires written examinations only.
What are Functional Skills?
Functional Skills are Communication (Adult Literacy), Application of Number (Adult Numeracy) and Information Communication Technology (ICT).
You may also be required to do Wider Functional Skills - Improving own Learning & Performance, Working with Others and Problem Solving.
Each Apprenticeship Framework prescribes which key skills are required and at which level and are usually integrated within your main vocational award. You may need to do Functional Skills external assessments and also build a portfolio of evidence specifically for your Functional Skills awards.
Does everyone have to do Functional Skills?
Key skills are an integral part of every apprenticeship framework, however, you may be exempt from all or part of the key skills requirements. We will ask you for evidence of your previous achievements and will match these with the requirements of your apprenticeship framework.
We will explain to you exactly what you need to do to ensure the achievement of your full apprenticeship but if you need any further guidance please call us on 01536 411200.
